I had the same exact problem with my HP laptop. It would overheat and the battery was always running low even after being charged for a full day.
I just bought a VGN-CS33G VAIO and I am totally loving it!

What was your old HP model? , mine was pavilion dv2242ae
Same problems!
Always overheating and crash too often, had it repaired when was under warranty but still preform poorly, and the battery never passed 25% charge in the last few weeks.
